A larger version of the Card Players outside a Tavern was sold at Hampel, Munich, on 4 July 2008, lot 215. Gillis van Tilborgh, who was probably trained by David Teniers II, painted genre paintings with parties around tables and rustic hostels featuring weddings and fights, as well as allegorical depictions of the Five Senses. In 1666 he was appointed castellan and curator at the Castle of Tervuren.
