Giovanni Segantini
(Arco 1858 – 1899 Schafberg near Pontresina)
Jeremiah lamenting the destruction of Jerusalem (Profeta ebreo che lamenta la distruzione di Gerusalemme), circa 1898–1899, inscribed G. Segantini, oil on paper on board, laid down on panel, 88 x 109 cm, framed, (GG)
Provenance:
Most probably from the Matilde Serao collection, Naples;
Christies’, 1974;
Italian private collection.
Catalogued and illustrated in:
Annie-Paul Quinsac, catalogo generale, Milan, 1982, Vol. II, p. 441, ill. 534.
The present lot is probably one of Giovanni Segantini’s last works. It was painted around 1898 when the artist turned his attention to religious subjects. As Segantini died in 1899, art critics failed to register this change and, as a consequence, this part of his oeuvre remains little known and scarcely documented.
Nevertheless, sketches for Adam and Eve in the Earthly Paradise from that period do still exist.The subject of the present painting indicates a solid understanding of Jewish tradition: the prophet wears the Taled, is barefooted and kneeling down. The posture indicates lamentation.
He bewails the destruction of Jerusalem. The topographical features of the city and the mountains in the background indicate that this is Jerusalem. God’s anger is expressed in the form of the dark clouds and the sense of destruction and isolation dominating the city. Dead bodies and skulls are depicted in the foreground amongst the ruins, references to the Book of Jeremiah who is very probably the prophet represented here.
The Book of Jeremiah appears to have left a deep impression on Segantini who was obsessed with death.
The colours, harmonious application of dark brown and blue grey, interrupted with a few accents of red and ochre, indicate the aridity and desolation of his country, and God’s curse on mankind.
During this transition period in which the artist desperately searched for new sources of inspiration, this subject indicates a return to a more traditional technique. The iconography of the present lot suggests a new direction and convinces us fully of the work’s attribution to Segantini.
