the original version of the quail décor was taken from Chinese decorative painting from the Song period; it inspired the Japanese court painter, Mitsuoki Tosa, 1617–1691, whose images were the immediate precedent for the Kakiemon painters. The image of the quail pair in combination with the prunus tree and the kikyo plant was exclusively used for the export market by Japanese porcelain painters and copied by painters at Meissen.
