porcelain, service with polychrome painted portraits of the king, his 2nd wife, Princess Karoline Friederike Wilhelmine and their 4 dead children as angels in the clouds, body with protruding rim to lip and foot, inner gilding with gilt star on a white well, to exterior white, burnished and matt gilt rims, emerald green ground with burnished and matt gilt-painted lyres, laurel branches and rosette, medallion with polychrome painted portraits, framed by burnished and matt gilt leafy twigs and flowers on a gilt ribbon, gilt stem and foot and handle with scroll and foliate terminals, egg-shaped jugs and lids with similar décor, height 26 cm, cover restored, height 23 cm, cups height 9 cm, saucer Ø 14.5 cm, underside with wide, fine gilt rim, some restoration to underside of 1 piece, Vienna, Imperial Manufactory, underglaze blue shield mark, year mark 1815, various turner no., painter Leopold Lieb (Ru)

Leopold Lieb, Vienna 1771–6.12.1836, history painter, 1800–1836 at the Manufactory, in 1792 entered training in the history faculty at the Viennese Academy, first work as enamel painter, on 15.6.1815 he was awarded a decretum laudis at the Manufactory, becoming one of the most versatile painters.

Maximilian I, Maria Michael Johann Baptist Franz de Paula Joseph Kaspar Ignatius Nepomuk, Schwetzingen 27.5.1756–13.10.1825 Munich, thanks to an alliance with Napoleonic France he became the first king of Bavaria on 1.1.1806. Maximilian Joseph married Princess Auguste Wilhelmine, 1765–1796, on 30.9.1785; and they had 5 children. Amalia Marie Auguste, 1790- 1794, died at the age of 4 years old. On the death of his first wife, he married Princess Karoline Friederike Wilhelmine, 1776–1841, on 8.3.1797, who became Queen of Bavaria on 1.1.1806; and they had 8 children. One son was still-born. Maximilian Joseph Karl Friedrich 1800–1803, died at the age of 3 years old. Maximiliane Josepha Karoline 1810-1821, died aged 11. This service comes from the ownership of Prince Ernst Heinrich, Duke of Saxony. It was sold to a private collector.
