Thomas Schwanthaler,

Thomas Schwanthaler, - Starožitnosti (Nábytek, Socha?ská díla)

(1634–1707 Ried im Innkreis), masterly baroque pair of angels, ca. 1670 – 80, lime wood carved in the round, polychrome painted and gilded, height 130 and 150 cm, painting restored and partly flaked off, (MC)

Provenance: Munich private collection. Thomas Schwanthaler was born in Ried im Innkreis in 1634 and at the age of 22 took over his father’s sculpture workshop. He is considered to be one of the most significant sculptors in Upper Austria of the second half of the 17th century. His masterwork is the great double altar in St. Wolfgang am Abersee from 1676. These angels are closely related to the putto from the Benedict altar in Mary Plain, Salzburg, as well as with the figures of angels and the child Jesus on the double altar in St. Wolfgang. One can compare the head-shapes and expressions, the highly dynamic child’s body as well as the curly, flaming hair, typical for the year in which they were produced.
