Indonesia, Kalimantan (Borneo), Dayak: A large, white mask.

Indonesia, Kalimantan (Borneo), Dayak: A large, white mask. - Mimoevropské a domorodé um?ní

A large mask, carved from light-coloured wood, painted white, black and red on the front side (with 'modern' lacquer colours, that have actually existed in Indonesia for a long time). With heavy stylistic features of Dayak Kenjah-Kayan masks: the mouth shape, the pointed, protruding chin, small, triangular ‘peepholes’ next to the large eyes, and so on.. On the other hand it is possible to detect that the form was also influenced by the Javanese Wayang-Topeng masks (no ‘side portions’, which are otherwise typical of Dayak masks, no feathered ‘rattan’ cap). Hence, this large, very beautifully executed mask probably originates from South Borneo (with stylistic influence from Java). With a ‘bite bar’ on the reverse, such that the dancers could better hold the large mask, and with good, old usage patina on the surface of the reverse and an all edges of the mask. First half of the 20th century; H: 36 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Collection of Prof. Rudolf Leopold, Vienna.
