Philippines, Island of Luzon, Ifugao: An old ritual box, called 'Punamhan’.
An old ‘Punamhan’ ritual box with three-dimensional pig heads carved on the left and right. From Ifugao on the northern Island of Luzon, Banaue region. Made of hard narra wood, rectangular, with lid. A hole on the top edge of the body of the vessel (animal depredation?). With old, partly encrusted, black patina. The priests of Ifugao used these ritual boxes during their sacrificial ceremonies. The two pig heads indicate that valuable pigs were frequently the sacrificial animals during Ifugao rituals. Early 20th century; dimensions: 56 cm x 13 cm x 18 cm. (ME)
