The relief is carved from hard, brown wood, an architectural fragment of a Hindu temple or a cult wagon. In one niche, bordered by floral garlands, stands a Hindu goddess (probably a wife of the god of love, Kama), in an s-shaped ‘Tribhanga’ pose with crossed legs. Her left arm is supported by a rod, on her right hand rests a parrot, the ‘mount’ of the love god Kama. The goddess stands before a ‘Makara’, a mythical being, that is presently depicted with a lion’s body and the head of a sea monster. In Hinduism, the ‘Makara’ figure, usually the mount of the river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna, is also connected with the love god Kama. From the dragon mouth of the ‘Makara’ spring forth the leafy and floral garlands, which border the relief and culminate in a lotus bud. H: 28 cm, W: 18 cm. First half of the 20th century. (ME)
