India: a ‘Shiva lingam' of polished stone.

India: a ‘Shiva lingam' of polished stone. - Mimoevropské a domorodé um?ní

The ‘Shiva lingam’, also called ‘Brahmanda’ or ‘World egg’, is the symbol of the Hindu god Shiva. It is also known as the ‘destroyer’ and in Hindu religion it signifies becoming and decaying in the eternal cycle of nature. Its abstract sign is the ‘lingam’, a polished, egg-shaped stone placed at the centre of every Shiva temple in India. It is washed and decorated by priests in the temple and worshipped by believers. In its clear, abstract form, the ‘lingam’ symbolises ‘male tranquillity’, whilst the signs in contrasting colour and the inclusions on the surface of the stone can be interpreted as ‘female disquiet’. Popular belief regards the erect form of the ‘lingam’ as the symbol of the god’s phallus and the colourful inclusions as its female counterpart (vulva). The present ‘Shiva lingam’ is made from light-grey stone, with beautiful, red ‘troubled’ inclusions, and polished. First half to mid-20th century; H: c. 20.5 cm. (ME)
