Makonde, Tanzania, Mozambique: A medicine holder with beautiful head-shaped top.
The Makonde use these containers for ‘medicine’, snuff tobacco or gunpowder. They are called 'Mtete' or 'Litete'. The present 'Litete' consists of a pumpkin calabash, with a stopper made of wood. The handle on this top is carved in the form of an especially beautiful Makonde head and dyed black. With the typical scarification marks of the Makonde on the face. A small, but qualitatively magnificent piece of workmanship! This object, together with a carrying strap of plant fibres, displays good usage patina overall and beautiful shiny patina on the head. First half of the 20th century; H: 24 cm. (ME)
Literature: 'Tanzania' by Marc L. Felix and Maria Kecskesi, ill. 14 to 17, 70, 71, 72, 317, 318; 'Shangaa. Art of Tanzania' by Gary van Wyk, ill. fig. 1.17, 4.27, 5.2, 5.3, 5.6 et al.
