Makonde,

Makonde, - Mimoevropské a domorodé um?ní

Tanzania, Mozambique: A male body mask with a helmet mask, carved from a single piece. Probably depicting a European. Whilst the female body masks of the Makonde deal with the serious topic of birth (see cat. no. 147), these male masks are used for entertainment in connection with coarse jokes during the big ‘Mapiko dance feasts’ of the young Makonde men. The present, male mask combination (‘Ndimu’ body and ‘Lipiko’ helmet mask carved from a single piece!) is made of lightweight, light-coloured wood, dyed red on the front side. Hairstyle, beard and genitalia are covered in real hair. This curious, rare piece probably depicts a European, at whom the Makonde people poked fun during their dances. The reddish skin, the shape of the face with a thin-lipped mouth and the form of the beard would support this interpretation. However, this late entertainment mask displays visible usage patina (on the back), scuffed colours on the front, and an original repair on the left side of the body (a crack, glued). Mid-20th century; H: 74 cm. (ME)
