Makonde, Tanzania, Mozambique: A ‘Lipiko’ helmet mask representing a Makua woman.
Women of the Makua tribe, living on the East-African coast of the Indian Ocean, were considered by Makonde men to be especially beautiful. The present ‘Lipiko helmet mask’ by a Makonde carver depicts a venerated Makua woman. Made of lightweight, light-coloured wood, carved thin and coloured in brown. It displays a four-part crested coiffure with applied real hair, a red ‘ornamental button’ in the left nostril and two small earrings of small, white and black glass pearls in the right earlobe. With good, old usage patina on the outside as well as on the inside, and with an old original repair on an early crack both on and under the left ear (stitched with a piece of leather). First half of the 20th century; H: 29 cm. (ME)
Provenance: Austrian private collection.
Literature: 'Shangaa. Art of Tanzania' by Gary van Wyk, ill. p. 127, fig. 3.25.
