Makonde, Tanzania, Mozambique: small, old face mask, dyed red.
A rare, small, old face mask of the Makonde stilt dancers from Tanzania (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 138). Made of light-coloured, lightweight wood, originally dyed red. In long, oval form, with accentuated eyelids, protruding nose, a ‘moustache’ made of a small leather stripe and an open mouth with teeth. Remains of old iron nails on the forehead and at the crown, with which a ‘coiffure’ was formerly attached. ‘Highlights’ made of glued silver foil in both eyes and on one tooth are later additions, as is also the grey stocking sewn onto the mask rim, with which the mask was kept in place on the dancer’s head. With very good, old usage patina on the front and back, and with some age damage: some colour scuffed as a result of age, some pieces broken off on nose and forehead, and a long tear on the left face half 'sewn' with an interesting, old original repair. 2 small cracks on the upper edge. End of the 19th, beginning of the 20th century. H: 21.5 cm. (ME)
