A small stool in the typical shape of the Ashanti: with rectangular, arched seat and rectangular base plate. Between them four straight supports with sculptural decoration on the sides. In the middle a round, hollow column, with geometrical openwork decoration (see also cat. no. 135). The present Ashanti stool was originally made of light-coloured wood. When the owner dies, the stool (as ‘seat of the soul’) is often dyed black. These black stools, called ‘ancestor seats’, are subsequently worshipped with sacrificial offerings. This chair displays some minor age damage: two supports are broken, with remains of an early original repair. First third of the 20th century; dimensions: c. 25 cm x 43 cm x c. 20 cm. (ME)
Provenance: German private collection.
Literature: 'Afrikanische Sitze' by Sandro Bocola, ill. 31, 32.
