A typical, very beautiful stool of the Ashanti, made of light-coloured, hard wood, with an arched seat and a central support in the form of a hollow, rectangular column, flanked by thick semicircles (‘porcupine type’). On a rectangular base plate with two steps. Carved from one piece of wood. With rich additional decoration, three-dimensional and in relief. This relatively large piece displays good, old usage patina (seat!) and minor age damage: an original repair (sheet metal stripe nailed to the support), tears (partly repaired with small iron clamps), as well as some pieces broken off on the edge of the base plate. First half of the 20th century; H: 26 cm to 35 cm (edge), W: 54 cm (base plate). Every Ashanti, both male and female, owned their own stool, which was also regarded as the ‘seat of the soul’ of its owner. When the stool was not used, it was leaned aslant against a wall in order to prevent other ‘souls’ passing by from sitting on it. (ME)
