Sukuma, Tanzania: an old leather shield in a typical shape.
A shield of the Sukuma from Northwest Tanzania, south of Lake Victoria. Made of thick buffalo or hippopotamus skin, retracted on both long sides. With an arched, diagonal ridge and a central shield boss. Stretched on the back on a vertical wooden rod by means of leather bands. The handle on the back is wrapped in leather. A very old item with good usage patina. Between the 19th and the early 20th centuries; H: 66 cm. (ME) ASA
