Ethiopia, Amhara, Oromo: round shield made of leather.
A round shield made of brown buffalo, rhinoceros or hippopotamus leather. From the central or southern highlands of Ethiopia. With cord edge and a shield boss in ‘Amhara shape’ made of the same leather. The front side is pierced all around the rim (for carrying and hanging loops), and decorated with bands of spikes, lines and crossed hatchings throughout. The leather handle is attached to the back by means of leather bands. This old shield, which formerly belonged to a warrior, displays about six bumps on its front side resulting from lancet and sword blows. An original repair (sewn). 19th century, beginning of the 20th century, DM: 51 cm to 54 cm. (ME)
