A round, black shield of buffalo or hippopotamus skin. These round shields were manufactured by the tribes in the southcentral area of Ethiopia (Arussi-Galla, Oromo) as well as in the southwestern Sidamo region (Amarro, Hadiya, and others). On the front side these shields feature a raised ridge as central shield boss, surrounded by 6 large knops. Relief lines radiate from this centre to the outer cord edge. Between the relief lines are small knops in two circular rows. The frontal surface of the shield is additionally decorated with a fine, incised geometrical pattern. The handle on the back is made of leather, braided with leather straps. Very good usage patina overall. Two old original repairs: Tears sewn with leather straps. DM: c. 70 cm. 19th century. (ME)
Provenance: German private collection.
