The chiefs and dignitaries of the Gurage and Arussi-Galla in southwestern Ethiopia sit on this ‘throne’ when holding office: carved from a single large piece of hard, heavy wood, coloured in brown. With a round, carved-out seat as well as a stool. On three curved legs that are connected to the seat by means of three supports. A high rest with geometrical openwork is attached to the seat. In very good condition, with patina and only minor age damage as a result of usage. First half to mid-20th century; H: 90 cm, DM: 50 cm (seat). (ME)

Provenance: from the estate of the Austrian doctor Dr. Rudolf Knorr, who worked in Addis Abeba (Ethiopia) as chief doctor of the ‘Imperial Guard Hospital’ and personal medical attendant to emperor Haile Selassie from 16 January 1950 until 6 August 1960. Dr Rudolf Knorr committed himself to the creation of a modern health system and was awarded the ‘Order of Menelik’ as well as the honorary title ‘ras’ (prince) for his achievements. The items Dr Knorr brought from Ethiopia have been in the ownership of his family since.
