Zande (or Azande), Dem. Rep. of Congo: A typical ‘Yanda figure’.

Zande (or Azande), Dem. Rep. of Congo: A typical ‘Yanda figure’. - Mimoevropské a domorodé um?ní

These highly abstract human figures made of wood, called ‘Yanda’, belong to the ‘Mani society’ of the Zande people, in northern Congo. They are ‘charged’ with magic powers by the head of the ‘Mani society’ and are believed to protect from illness, witchcraft and sterility, and to guarantee a lucky hunt. These ‘Yanda figures’ of the Zande people are regarded as a perfect example of the high degree of abstraction in so-called ‘primitive art’. The present, characteristic 'Yanda figure' of black-dyed wood displays the typical, large, almost hemispheric head, with small, red glass pearls as eyes, short arms, short sturdy legs and a just as typical, heavily accentuated navel. With very old, partly encrusted patina! Around the neck and hips a ring made of knotted plant fibres.First third of the 20th century; H: c. 30 cm. (ME)

Provenance: German private collection.

Literature: 'Die Kunst des schwarzen Afrika' by Kerchache, Paudrat, Stephan, ill. 647, 649.
