Pende, Dem. Rep. of Congo: An ivory ‘Ikhoko’ pendant in the form of a chief mask.
An ‘Ikhoko pendant’ of the Pende people from the western part of Congo, made of old ivory (for a more detailed explanation see cat. no. 95). Stylistically modelled after a ‘Phumbu mask’, which represents a chief in the ‘Mbuya mask dances’ of the Pende people: with high, bulging forehead, from which 3 tattoo lines stretch towards the nose, ‘sagging’, large eyelids etc. Made of old ivory already turned yellowish. With delicate, dark age-related tears, good patina and convincing, old traces of usage. Between c. 1900 and the first third of the 20th century; H: 6 cm, W: 3.6 cm. (ME) ASA
