Teke, Dem. Rep. of Congo: A small Janus figure with a ‘magic ball’.
Among the regalia of a Teke chief in western Congo are also these Janus figures. They are called 'Mpwau’ and stand back to back, a man (with goatee) and a woman, probably representing the ‘ancestor’ couple of a Teke clan. The present Janus figure is made of wood, dyed black and displays the typical tribal, linear scarification marks of the Teke people on both faces. At their waist level they share a ‘magic ball’, called ‘Bilongo’, which indicates their use as ‘power figures’ and protective amulet. Minor age damage on the 'magic ball'. First half of the 20th century; H: 13.5 cm. (ME)
