Haussa, North Nigeria: A ‘Boubou’, the typical, richly embroidered prestige robe of the Haussa men.

Haussa, North Nigeria: A ‘Boubou’, the typical, richly embroidered prestige robe of the Haussa men. - Mimoevropské a domorodé um?ní

On festive occasions, the men of the Haussa (and Nupe) people in northern Nigeria wear these dressing capes together with trousers and a cap. The Haussa people call this elaborately embroidered piece of clothing ‘Boubou’, whereas the Nupe refer to it as ‘Agbada’. The present ‘Boubou’ was entirely manufactured in traditional style: The fabric was woven in narrow stripes, sewn together, treated with indigo dye and given a delicate white rectangular pattern by means of inserted threads. The large fabric piece was folded over (it consists of three parts) and sewn at the outer edges. Openings only in the upper section at the rim (for the head), on both sides (for the arms) and in the lower section (for the legs). On its front side and upper back section the present 'Boubou' is richly embroidered with white cotton. With various symbols and patterns (‘endless knot’, entwined band motifs, ‘knife teeth’ etc.). With good, old traces of usage. No damage. First half of the 20th century. Dimensions: c. 230 cm x 130 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Austrian private collection.

Literature: 'african textiles' by John Gillow, p. 100 and p. 103, with ill.
