The Chamba people live in eastern Nigeria, to the south of the Benue river, on either side of the Cameroon border. Their large, heavy helmet masks are used in religious ceremonies, initiations, funerals as well as on the occasion of the enthronement of new chiefs. The present 'classic', old buffalo mask is made of heavy, brown wood. With remains of red colouring (= 'female type'), a central ridge, running vertically across the helmet into a small, narrow nose. Along the central axis as well as on the upper edges are rows with motifs of circles and dots as decoration. Very good, old usage patina. With age-related damage: tears and 3 cracks (below and on left buffalo horn), with old original repairs (glued with dark tree resin). H: 33 cm (Helm), L: 70 cm. Between the end of the 19th and the first third of the 20th century. (ME)
Provenance: Thailor, London/Lagos; Austrian private collection.
Literature: 'Die Kunst des schwarzen Afrika' by Kerchache, Paudrat, Stephan, ill. 516; 'Fusions. Masquerades and thought style east of the Niger-Benue confluence, West Africa' by Richard Fardon, p. 12 to p. 84, with numerous illustrations.
