Ibo (or Igbo), Nigeria: A large helmet mask of the ‘Mmwo’ type.
A 'classic' Ibo mask with a white-coloured face. It depicts the ‘beautiful girl who comes from the afterlife’. The male dancers of the 'Mmwo masks' perform in polychrome, tight-fitting full-body costumes during the annual feasts and ceremonies in honour of their gods, ancestors and women. The present, large 'Mmwo-mask' features three high, openwork combs in its black-and-red dyed hair. Its long, narrow face, with long nose, slit eyes and scarification marks, is coloured in white. This signifies that the person comes from the afterlife or the realm or the dead. With good usage patina on the outside as well as on the inside, with two old, original repairs (two tears in the hairpiece ‘sewn’ by means of rattan stripes) and minor age damage (some pieces broken off).
