Baule, Ivory Coast: Figure of a spirit spouse, called ‘Blolo-Bla’. - Mimoevropské a domorodé um?ní

A relatively small, but perfectly and very beautifully executed 'spirit spouse' figure of a Baule man. The Baule people believe that every married man and every married woman have a partner in the ‘other world’ of spirits, that is in the ‘bush’ or in the afterlife. It is possible to communicate with this imaginary partner - called 'Blolo Bian' (male) or 'Blolo Bla' (female) - in order to ask for advice or discuss everyday problems. The present 'Blolo Bla' is made of wood and dyed black. It has a finely executed, typical Baule hairstyle, a beautiful face, characteristic scarification marks and a prominent navel. An old piece with good proportions, heavy traces of use and minor age damage (to the neck and hair). First third of the 20th century; H: 31.5 cm. (ME)

Provenance: American collection; Austrian private collection.
