Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: A large, old ceremonial spoon, with carved legs.
With these spoons the women of the Dan cater for guests who come to the village to attend big ceremonial feasts. A beautiful object, made of a piece of light wood, dyed black, with linear grooved decoration and carved female lower abdomen with legs (rare!). With good, old usage patina, a band of textile and plant fibers, as well as some age damage: some pieces broken off at and near the margin of the spoon bowl in the upper section. Early 20th century; H: 51 cm. (ME)
