Dan, Ivory Coast, Liberia: Miniature or passport mask of the ‘gägon’ beak mask type.
This type of mask of the Dan people, called ‘gägon', represents a mythical hornbill. The mask, worn by men in full body costumes, represents a ‘ward’ in a bush camp of the young initiates, or it dances in the villages for entertainment purposes. According to the customs of the Dan people, mask dancers have the right to carry on themselves, in everyday life or when travelling, a miniature version of the mask with which they normally perform. This serves as a personal protection or as a sort of ‘identification’. The present ‘passport mask' of a ‘gägon dancer' is made of hard, brown wood and displays a visible, fairly old usage patina. First half of the 20th century; H: 14.5 cm, L: 16 cm. (ME)
