Mossi, Burkina Faso: Ceremonial flute in abstract human form.

Mossi, Burkina Faso: Ceremonial flute in abstract human form. - Mimoevropské a domorodé um?ní

A very carefully crafted flute of the Mossi. Originally carved in light-coloured wood and of dark brown colour. Decorated with linear scratches. The carpenter’s anthropomorphic concept becomes clearly recognisable in the long, bent ‘arms’ on both sides of the body. The mouthpiece above is the ‘head’. A trained flute player can produce two to three tones by closing and opening both holes (left and right underneath the mouthpiece) with his fingers. An interesting object with good usage patina. No age damage. First half of the 20th century; L: 30.5 cm. (ME)

Provenance: Walu Gallery, Zurich; Viennese private collection.

Literature: 'Encyclopedia of African Art and Culture' by K.-F. Schädler, ill. p. 441; 'Africa. Musica y Arte' by Elena Martinez-Jacquet & David Serra, ill. p. 25, fig. 3.
