Emil Nolde, one of the leading Expressionist artists, felt a strong attachment to nature. The perceived elementary primitiveness of the landscapes and the vitality of their changing moods was a constant source of new pictorial creations for the artist. The watercolour “Blooming plants before blue mountains” depicts exotic flowers that bloom in highly colour-intensive, uninterrupted red and yellow tones before the blue shadows of a mountain range, modulated only by a few black brushstrokes. Typically for him, Nolde positions the plants as a detail in the scene in the immediate foreground. This field observation took place in the spring of 1914 during Nolde’s voyage in the South Seas as part of the “Medical-demographic German-New Guinea expedition”.
