Certificate: expert analysis of the sculpture by Ivan Meštrovic´ … The owner brought the aforementioned work to Atelijer Meštrovic´ – Fundacija Ivana Meštrovic´a in Zagreb on 8 January 2002.
After archival research, expert analysis and examination of the work, the following conclusion was reached: Ms Janka Doranic´ personally testified that she received this sculpture as an inheritance after the death of Dora-Radej Kirin who, like her grandmother Beata Doranic-Kirin, was a sister of the famous painter Vladimir Kirin.
The archives of the Meštrovic´ Atelier in Zagreb document that this sculpture by Ivan Meštrovic´ was owned by Dora Radej-Kirin.
This documentation was gathered by the head of the Atelier, Ms Vesna Barbic´, who is now retired. The documentation lists several works by Ivan Meštrovic´ that were owned by his friend, the painter Vladimir Kirin. In addition, the above sculpture was on display at the Meštrovic´ exhibition in Zagreb’s Museum Space in 1983.
The sculpture is known from earlier literature, and is mentioned on page 61 number 74 of the first monograph on Ivan Meštrovic´’s works, which was published in London in 1919.
There are visible cracks to the lower portion of the sculpture, to the right-hand side, to the head, around the neck and to the left arm. The tip of the index finger on the left hand is missing, and there are visible losses: small holes measuring 5 x 5 mm are located on the upper portion and below the right ear. Tiny holes are visible across the entire lower portion of the sculpture.
During his stay in Split, Ivan Meštrovic´ modelled this likeness of Slavan Vidovic´, who was the son of the famous Croatian painter Emanuel Vidovic´.
This likeness is one of the most important works within Meštrovic´’s portrait oeuvre from the time he spent as a student.
In line with existing documentation from the Atelier Meštrovic´ in Zagreb and the expert analysis of the work, it is confirmed that the sculpture of Slavan Vidovic´, a likeness crafted from plaster with the dimensions 35.6 x 19 x 20 cm and owned by Janka Doranic´, is an original piece by the sculptor Ivan Meštrovic´.
