demon carpet vaq-vaq, Northwest Persia (Iran), c. 242 x 195 cm, mid-19th century, symmetrical knot, slightly layered with silk warp and weft (single-weft), finely knotted with c. 720,000 kts/sqm; this demon carpet, which to our knowledge is unpublished, and displays a scene from Persian mythology with the talking vaq-vaq tree, where the branches extend into animal and demon grotesques, a div (demon) sits at the top of the tree, at the foot a pair of lions and pair of rhinoceroses face each other respectively, the scene is completed by fish in a creek, this rare carpet is in an excellent state of preservation with minimal signs of wear and some minor stitching.
