(Vienna 1889-1946) Don Quixote, 30s, plastic from iron and brass thread, height 47 cm, (K)
Berthold Ordner – son of a goldsmith in Vienna, studied to be a banker, was an officer in World War 1, Went blind in 1927. His first plastic works were made of thread. After three years in the concentration camp of Theresienstadt, Ordner died in Vienna in January 1946.
From a text by Berthold Ordner: ... Just as when I draw, I always do the outlines with thread. After years ofpractice I am capable of forming a figure in one gesture and with a single piece of thread, just like an illustrator sketches outlines in a single stroke. Using this new method I have succeeded in making drawings from thread….
