Michaelangelo Cerquozzi
(Rome 1602–1660)
Pomegranates, quinces and figs on a slab of stone,
oil on canvas, 45.5 x 68 cm, framed
Certificate:
Alberto Cottino
The present painting displays an open pomegranate, a closed pomegranate and two figs on a slab of stone. The depiction is naturalistic and at the same time contemplative. A small snail is visible on the pomegranate to the right of the painting. The scene is touched by the evening light, which further underlines the contemplative and meditative character of the painting, interrupted by a ray of light that illuminates the quince in the foreground. The plasticity of the fruit is achieved through the skillful illumination. The naturalistic depiction and the treatment of the light, strongly reminiscent of Caravaggio’s works, are apparent in the present painting. The painting can be, according to Cottino, dated to the third or fourth decade of the 17th century.
