Antwerp School, around 1560
Madonna with sleeping child and three angels,
oil on copper, 36.8 x 30 cm, framed
As the filigree drawing of the figures and the porcelain-like colouring suggest, the present painting belongs stylistically to the Antwerp School of the second half of the 16th century. Attributions to Michiel Coxcie and Vincent Sellaer have been suggested. The picture follows a prominent Lombard model, the “Madonna del Pannolino” by Bernardo Luini, a pupil of Leonardo. The author of this painting succeded in translating his model into an individual pictorial language that is adequate for the depiction of the event. He thus remained faithful to his Northern European origin.
