Balthasar Huys
(Mechelen, active around 1612–1652 Rotterdam)
Still life with a swan, ducks, fruits and vegetables,
oil on panel, 91.5 x 124 cm, framed
Provenance:
Collection of Count de Brouchoven de Bergeyck, Bouchout Castle;
Harinxma toe Sloot Collection, Apeldoorn, Netherlands;
Vanderekindere auction, Brussels, 15 November 2007, lot 15 (as Netherlandish School, 17th century).
We are grateful to Mr Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague, for confirming the present painting as a work by Balthasar Huys on the basis of a digital photograph. He detects elements that are typical of Huys in the execution of the head of cabbage and of the dead duck. This painting can be compared with a still life by Huys that was auctioned at Sotheby’s, Amsterdam, on 7 November 2000 as lot 195.
