Praying Mother of God,
oil on panel, 39.5 x 29.5 cm, in an integral frame
The present painting is based on a pictorial style created by Aelbert Bouts and preserved in numerous versions (cf. M. J. Friedländer, Early Netherlandish Painting, vol. III, Leiden 1968, p. 67/ 68, no. 63a and 63h, plate 77). In general these compositions, often framed as diptychs, serve as pendants of a “Christ crowned with thorns”. In an examination of the painting by Prof Manfred Schreiner, Vienna, through the use of infrared images the underdrawing and several pentiments were made visible.
