Marcantonio Franceschini
(Bologna 1648–1729)
The Infant Saint John the Baptist,
oil on canvas, 75 x 62 cm, framed
We are grateful to Emilio Negro for confirming the attribution on the basis of a digital photograph.
Franceschini was the pupil of Carlo Cignani, himself the most distinguished pupil of Francesco Albani, and therefore traced his artistic lineage directly back to Bolognese classicism.
Negro has dated the present work to Franceschini´s early period. In the early 1680s Franceschini developed his independent practice and demonstrated that he was more brilliant in invention and execution than the slower and more meticulous Cignani and had a particular gift for conveying the elegant and poetic.
Works by Franceschini were popular with a patrician clientele also outside of Italy, especially his princely patrons in the German-speaking lands, such as Count Kaunitz-Rietburg, Johann Wilhelm Wittelsbach, Elector Palatine, or Johann Adam, Prince of the House of Liechtenstein in Vienna. Between 1719–22 Franceschini was a director of the Accademia Clementina, Bologna’s first official art academy.
