a pair (2)
Provenance:
Galleria Nella Longari, Milan
Literature: S. Bellesi, Andrea Scacciati. Pittore di fiori, frutta e animali a Firenze in età tardobarocca, Florence 2012, p. 31, no.s 26 and 27
Bellesi has dated the present paintings to the 1680s or 1690s. They are related to works by Margherita Caffi and Andrea Scacciati as well as being reminiscent of the paintings of Willem van Aelst, which Bimbi may have seen in the Medici collections.
Bimbi studied in Rome under Mario dei Fiori, Lorenzo Lippi, Onorio Marinari, and Agnolo Gori. Afterwards, he worked at the Medici court, specialising in the depiction of animals and vegetables. His style is characterised by a scientifically accurate approach, and he seems to have been in close contact with contemporary scientists such as Francesco Redi and Pier Antonio Micheli, who were also active at the court of Cosimo III.
Bimbi’s flower paintings only represent a small part of his extensive oeuvre.
