We are grateful to Professor Donatella Biagi Maino for confirming the attribution to Orazio Samacchini on the basis of a photograph.
In keeping with traditional iconography, the representation of the theme is here organised along two levels.. The present painting’s small dimensions and the depiction of the bearded man on the left, which Tellini Perina has suggested may be identified as the painting’s patron, indicate that the picture was intended for private devotion. It seems very likely that the painting dates from Samacchini’s period in Parma.
