We are grateful to Dr. Peter van den Brink, Suermondt-Ludwig-Museum, Aachen, for confirming the attribution on the basis of a digital photograph (written communication, 4th July 2013).
An earlier composition which served as a prototype for many subsequent copies is in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich (Inv. No. 539) and has been attributed to Quinten Massys and Willem Key. Elements of this work have influenced the present picture.
