Emperor Francis I of Austria – gift box to the Stadthauptmann of Ofen, Christoph Szeth,
gold, enamelled, rectangular, rounded corners, guilloché, blue enamelled bands (some chipping), hinged lid with engraved silver plaquette on the inside, 8.5 x 6 x 1.8 cm, overall weight 103 g, master’s mark mis-struck, Swiss hallmark, c. 1820, in original case, (Lu)
On the occasion of a visit to Ofen with his wife, Empress Caroline Augusta, in 1820, Emperor Francis I donated the present golden covered box to Christoph Szeth, then Magistratsrat (city councillor), Stadtrichter (town judge) and Stadthauptmann (mayor) in Ofen. The engraving reads: “Francisco I Plaque conivge Carolina Augustis Budae Habitantibus, Xeniabenigne Donantibus Pyxismaec Cessit Christophoro Szethlo.” The engraving, in the form of a chronogram, confirms the gift to the Stadthauptmann (mayor) of Ofen. Christoph Szeth came from a well-to-do middle-class family in Ofen. The so-called “Szeth House” is still regarded as one of Budapest’s major attractions today. Very rare, gold covered box with an interesting historical connection with the city of Budapest.
