The present painting is a copy by Köpp of the composition by Franz Anton Maulbertsch from 1754, now in the Residenzgalerie in Salzburg. Köpp, who studied under Maulbertsch at the Vienna Academy between 1752 and 1760, was a drawing teacher at the Theresian Military Academy and in 1772 became a member of the Vienna Art Academy. His masterpiece is an Ascension of Christ from 1772, for which he collaborated with his father, in the mountain church of Eisenstadt-Oberberg. However, Köpp became primarily known for his scagliola works, which made him successful internationally.
