A scene set in a harem by the hand of Canton bearing an almost identical inscription on the verso and numbered XXI was sold at the Vienna Dorotheum on 4 September 1992. Both paintings might be based on French engravings reproducing pictorial inventions by Vanmour. The "Conseiller de Guerre de Dierling", who is mentioned on both pictures, can be identified as Joseph von Dierling, Imperial Resident to Istanbul until 1727.
