We are grateful to Prof. Dr. Herwarth Röttgen for confirming the authenticity of and for cataloguing the present painting, which depicts the apostles Matthew and Peter. The latter can be identified by the key on the floor, while Matthew’s identity is revealed by the inscription of INRI in pen at the lower left margin, which refers to chapter 27:37 of his gospel. The cock implies Peter’s betrayal, which is also related in the Gospel of Matthew (chapter 26:34).
