Prague School, c. 1590

Prague School, c. 1590 - Obrazy starých mistr?

Portrait of a member of the House of Habsburg, probably Ferdinand II of Tyrol (1529–1595), oil on canvas, 69 x 51 cm, framed

Inscribed at a later date at lower left: "Rudolphus II. Röm. Kaiser" and dated at upper right "1591".

We are grateful to Dr. Eliska Fucikova, Dr. Karl Schütz, and Dr. Werner Telesko for their assistance in cataloguing the present painting. Archduke Ferdinand II was a son of Emperor Ferdinand I and the brother of the Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II. Between 1547 and 1567, he was governor of Bohemia, and after his father’s death in 1564 became ruler of Tyrol and Further Austria. He had been secretly married to Philippine Welser, the daughter of an Augsburg patrician, since 1557. Their marriage was accepted by Emperor Ferdinand I in 1561 under the prerequisite that it would not be made public. Their children were allowed to use the addition “of Austria” to their first names; however, they should only inherit the throne if the other male members of the House of Habsburg should die out. Ferdinand was considered a cultivated and art-minded person and enjoyed great popularity among the people.
