1951 The first (and only) exhibition of the “Hundsgruppe” (dog group) was held in March at the premises of the Wiener Gesellschaft für Wissenchaft und Kunst. Despite the presence of Mikl and Hollegha’s abstract works, the surrealist and phantasmagorical works dominated – Rainer himself had not yet completely disengaged himself from surrealism: the opening was marked by a true artistic scandal: disappointed by Ernst Fuchs’ opening speech, Rainer, at the time calling himself “TRRR” which was intended to sound like the growling of a dog, spontaneously began to insult the audience. He climbed up a ladder and shouted, “I spit on you. You, with your rotten concept of art”. This marked the official beginning of Tachisme in Vienna....
1952 Departing from the microstructures, Rainer moves on to the centralisations, central and vertical designs, predominantly sparse, graphics composed of only a few lines. The works were painted on sackcloth and old paintings which he purchased at Vienna’s Dorotheum. Lacking materials, Rainer began his first (illicit) overpainting of other people’s works. He signed them “TRRR”.
In February the artist presented his latest works at the Galerie Kleinmayr in Klagenfurt. In March he was given a solo exhibition at the Zimmergalerie Franck in Frankfurt Main, today regarded as one of the first manifestations of Art Informel in central Europe. The catalogue published to accompany the exhibition included Rainer’s text manifesto Malerei um die Malerei zu verlassen and Das Einzige gegen das Andere. He travelled to Paris for the second time.
