Castellani’s primary interest concerns the orderly repetition of a gesture. He wants to make concrete the exact awareness of an instant without leaving any possibility of metamorphosis. He considers the canvas as a living part of the wall, of an infinitely repeatable wall, an hypothetical wall that is continually hiding and revealing itself and all the points that enliven it. In the distance, the trackings, the varying tension of which shows the artist’s delicate balancing act, his presence. It is a presence that is continually verified through the gesture, a punctual arranger of a constructive rhythm.
(Exhibition catalogue, Galleria La Nuova Loggia, Bologna, 1967)
