Bartholomäus Ignaz Weiss
(Munich 1730–1814) A study sheet with several figures on the recto and on the reverse, pen and brown ink, brown und grey wash, auf laid paper, 21,5 x 33,5 cm, mounted, framed, (Sch)
From 1764 onwards Bartholomäus Ignaz Weiss was a porcelain painter at the Kurfürstliche Manufacture Nymphenburg. In 1770 he became a member of the newly erected Munich Academy. Soon afterwards he was appointed Electoral Court Miniaturist, in whose function he carried out several portraits of members of the Bavarian court. Apart from miniatures he carried out oil paintings and numerous etching in the style of Rembrandt, which he conceived himself or executed after models by famous masters. Weiss also owned a large volume of drawings by Johann Andreas Wolff, who decisively influenced his style; weiss also received significant inspirations from Johann Georg Asam. The present study sheet comprising a double page presumably derives from a sketch book, in which Weiss copied figures after older masters. See: Thieme-Becker, Allg. Lexikon der Bildenden Kunst, Vol. 35 (1924), pp. 323–24.
