Attributed to Charles Mellin (Nancy circa 1600 – 1649 Rome)
A young woman, oil on canvas, 91 x 71 cm, framed
Although of undoubtedly high quality, it has not proven possible to date to find a convincing attribution for this painting. Some researchers, such as Prof Nicola Spinosa, have suggested a possible attribution to Charles Mellin or his close milieu. Mellin, who originated in Nancy in Lorraine, spent his artistic career predominantly in Italy, where he was known as Carlo Lorenese. During his early career, he collaborated with Simon Vouet, whose work had a great influence on him. He also enjoyed a good reputation as a fresco painter, competing in 1631 for a commission to decorate the Lady Chapel at San Luigi dei Francesi in Rome alongside Nicolas Poussin and Giovanni Lanfranco. He was awarded the commission. Mellin worked in Naples from 1643 until 1647. He gained new stimuli from the works of Artemisia Gentileschi. It is interesting from this standpoint, that Prof Riccardo Lattuada considers this painting to be very close to the Neapolitan oeuvre of Gentileschi.
